We’re walking on air with Air & Grace05/04/2016
If you are anything like us and ADORE shoes but wish they felt like trainers, then Air & Grace is the brand that you are been waiting for!
Founder Clare Burrows left her career designing for big brands to create the company; ‘I believe that shoes should feel as good as they look. I felt so passionately about this that I turned my search for the perfect pair into a business. Having worked for international footwear brands for the last twenty years I decided to go it alone. I launched Air & Grace with a simple philosophy "made beautiful for busy feet". It was a leap of faith, but I'm pleased to say I've finally found my perfect sole mates.
We are converted. Try them for yourself and we’re sure that you will be too!
How did the idea for Air & Grace come about? If you're anything like me you're busy, always running around and you need shoes that can stand the pace, but never at the expense of style. On many miserable days I longed for all the comfort of my favourite trainers wrapped up in a shoe. I've been in the footwear industry for over 20 years designing ranges for international brands including Kurt Geiger and Fitflop. I believe that style and wearability and style can co-exist, so I left the corporate world behind and embarked on a one woman mission to create beautiful shoes for busy feet.
What makes Air & Grace different from other brands?
Our patented Tender Loving Air technology is made from high performance materials normally found in top sports brands. It's a completely hidden wedge of lovely good stuff that people say feels as good as their trainers. But it's not just that, we pay attention to all the details. Our shoes are designed to take you from season to season in terms of style and quality. It's an anti- disposable approach. I select only the best leathers and everything is hand made in a family run factory in Portugal.
What are your wardrobe essentials?
My day to day look is all about quality classics with a twist. I'm a denim addict and a fan of a well cut white shirt. For statement pieces I adore cut, drape and detail so I invest in Marni, Alexander Wang and Helmut Lang.
What has been the high point of launching the business?
Thankfully there have been many (although there have been many lows too!). At concept stage I won a competition searching for the UK's best new brands. This was amazing as the prize was investment that enabled me to launch the first range. We then went on to debut on the catwalk at London Fashion Week collaborating with Teatum Jones. One of the most defining moments was when blogger Sasha Wilkins of Liberty London Girl called Air & Grace " The holy grail of footwear". It always makes me smile when we get great reviews and particularly when I get messages from happy customers. It's a long hard slog launching a business and it makes it all worthwhile.
What is next for Air & Grace?
We're keeping busy! We just won a "Buyer's Den" live pitch event, so we're going to be stocked at johnlewis.com. I'm off to Berlin on a trade Mission to meet with international retailers. We're talking to stockists in the UK, and there's new styles launching over the coming months including our first ever heels.
